Going on holiday: 10 things to do before you leave!

While summer often brings thoughts of sun, beaches, and salty water, taking your dog on vacation still requires a bit of organization. Whether you're going away for a week or a month (for the luckiest among us), discover the 10 things to do before you leave, with or without your dog!

5 things to do if I'm taking my dog on vacation

Many owners dream of going on vacation with their dog! While it may seem less complicated than it appears, it's essential to prepare thoroughly for your sunny getaway with your beloved pooch. Follow this guide for the 5 things you need to plan if you're taking your dog on vacation!

1) Check that vaccinations are up to date 💉

Remembering to bring your dog's health record is good, but checking that their vaccinations are up to date is even better! Depending on your destination, some vaccinations, like rabies, may be mandatory.

2) Bring enough food for the entire stay 🍖

To avoid upsetting your favorite Bandit's digestion, plan to bring their usual kibble and treats (or make sure you can find the same ones at your vacation spot) so as not to suddenly change their diet.

3) Take out an insurance policy 😇

Getting pet insurance for your dog is a good way to go on vacation with peace of mind. Depending on the policy, you can be reimbursed for all or part of the expenses incurred to treat your animal, such as a vet consultation, blood tests, medication, etc.

4) Find a vet at your destination👩‍⚕️

You know the saying, better safe than sorry! Locating a vet at your vacation spot before you leave will give you greater peace of mind. Because with the excitement of vacation and a new territory to conquer, your usually well-behaved dog can quickly turn a sunbathing session into a Koh-Lanta mission (yum, a jellyfish, it looks so good...!).

5) Pack their suitcase in advance 🎒

To make sure you don't forget anything essential, pack your beloved Bandit's suitcase a few days before you leave. This will prevent you from having to rush to a pet store because their favorite squeaky toy is missing!

5 things not to forget if I'm having my dog looked after

This year, your beloved pet isn't joining you on your trip. They were dreaming of a week romping in the Larzac, but your vacation mood is more about an overwater villa in the Maldives... No problem, you've found them THE BEST dog kennel. You're almost jealous! Here's the ideal checklist of 5 things not to forget if you're having your furry friend looked after!

1) Leave them a comfort object 🧸

Your dog might be a little sad to see you leave without them. Well, it's also possible they won't care at all and will go play with their new friends as soon as they arrive at their boarding facility! Either way, it's a good idea to leave them an object they love and that reassures them, like a favorite toy or bed.

2) Vaccinate them against kennel cough 🤧

While not mandatory, this vaccination is highly recommended (and required by most dog boarding facilities) if your dog will be spending time in a group setting. Canine infectious tracheobronchitis is highly contagious, so don't skip it!

3) Work on socialization beforehand 👯‍♀️

If your dog is more of a lone wolf than a pack leader, prepare them before their stay at daycare. This is important to reduce their stress and promote good integration. During walks in the park, let them sniff other dogs and encourage them to interact with their peers. You can also seek advice from a dog trainer.

4) Make proper introductions 🤝

If you've chosen a host family or dog sitter, arrange a meeting in advance to see if there's a connection between your dog and the person who will be looking after them during your absence. Your beloved pet can then calmly discover their new environment and possibly the other family animals.

5) Inform the dog sitter or kennel about your dog's habits 🐶

For the best possible stay, provide all useful information about your dog's habits. If they suffer from separation anxiety or take a food supplement every day at 7 PM, inform their caretaker.
